I want to start out by saying that your new book is fantastic and that I’m using it all the time with my families.  I absolutely love the charts and have had great success going through the 11 skills checklist with the parents.  They really seem to get what I’m explaining when I use the visuals.  I’ve found it to be useful in the following situations:

1) Use it as a segue into having a conversation about needing more testing

2) Reassuring parents of expressive language delay only kids that the children are well on their way to talking (9 out of 10 times it’s delayed imitation – but you knew that already!)

3) Checking progress in 3-6 months after first discussing the checklist

4) Reviewing it with parents to show where the child is getting stuck and to ideally have them do more to help their child progress (I’m thinking of a situation with a child whose attention is poor and could really use more outside time and less screen time)

I’m sure I will discover many more situations as I continue to review it.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.  Your work has transformed my practice and my confidence!”

I wish I had this when we first found out about his ASD diagnosis. I have read other books on improving social interaction the didn’t fit well with my son. The ASD books had activities that required language beyond his ability or the speech books didn’t address his lack of focus/attention. This was the perfect combination for my son who has very limited play skills. I also found the solutions for problems during play very helpful. I really like the format and how you’ve described ways to expand each of the activities.

Thanks,
Ly

I have purchased all your DVDs and have found them to be so helpful. I was so excited to get your book Teach me to Play WITH You! in the mail. My son is 23 months old and has been diagnosed with mild autism and suspected apraxia. He is my third child with apraxia and my second with autism. I’ve read MANY books, but I think yours is probably going to be the most helpful. The format makes it easy to copy and have my ABA therapists implement with my baby. We are having such a problem with imitation and your book is helping us to back up and do the motor action in a fun way (through song) that will increase joint attention and improve imitation. I love your products…they have really helped me alot! I think this book is going to be my favorite!

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Wright

Although he is getting some therapy at school, it is not enough for him. I wanted to work with him at home, but I didn’t know how until I watched your DVD and then read this book. I could find ideas in blogs or on Pinterest but I didn’t always know how to make it flow as therapy would. Your book has helped me know that. Now while he is at school I try to pick out something for us to do when he gets home in the afternoon. I have seen a big, big difference in him since I started doing this and I know it’s what has made the difference.”  Sarah – from Utah

Moms who have not had access to quality services (including parents who live outside the USA) have reported that this was their best resource for understanding not only what to work on with their children with language delays, but why and how SLPs select goals and implement strategies in specific play activities with toddlers.**

I am retiring from my school position in 2 weeks and have already been hired by a wonderful Early Intervention agency… in Pittsburgh. This manual is absolutely fantastic! Extremely organized and tons of functional fun activities for our speech and language delayed “wee ones”. Thank you, Laura, for sharing your expertise! Great job!”

I really like your point about how comprehension and expression are very different experiences for a child and in reviewing there may be signs that the child could have autism. This is so important for every parent to know. My sweet godson may have autism and we thinking if we work with a pediatric speech therapist, we’ll be able to pin point his needs.

My son just turned 19 months. He doesn’t say very many actual words. He talks all day but only says mama, dada, duck and pop clearly. He has no other red flags listed in the list above. His pediatrician said to contact her if he still hasn’t progressed by 21 months. She didn’t seem too concerned that he hasn’t said too much up to this point. Should I be worried?

I’ve ran cars through shaving cream pretending it was “snow” making “hills” “up and down”. Also can use strips of bubble wrap to make “bumpy” road. I’ve worked with OTs who are so great with sensory ideas! I’ve color sorted too! I’ve made up little “dittys” to sing along like “blue blue blue, we are all the color blue” I’ve also used “cool sand” to drive cars through!

I really appreciate how you can call it like it is and be frank about what is NOT helpful to teach language.

Thanks for everything! Your website and podcast and manuals have been invaluable to me in transitioning into private practice with toddler/preschool kids.

I feel my son does all those things quite well except for the first two.
In a nutshell:
My son is 3 years and 8 months. He can talk in full 5-7-word sentences. He initiates communication by not only stating his wants and needs, but comments on things like, “See the spider, Mommy?” He can expand into little conversations (after you’ve acknowledged him and ask ‘what’s he doing?”) with “It’s crawling up that wall.” Stuff like that. He has good joint attention like when we’re doing a puzzle together, he’ll always look to me and ask if this is the “right piece” by holding it up and showing me, then placing the piece in the slot and asking “like this?”- looking at me again. He can pedal a bike, throw a ball and run like the dickens. His eye-contact has improved significantly. When he was two, it wasn’t that good, neither was his name response, which also has improved, but still not that great when he’s preoccupied.

Comment on Can’t vs. Won’t by Lina https://teachmetotalk.com/2011/05/03/cant-vs-wont/#comment-1559248 Mon, 12 Jun 2017 19:50:19 +0000 https://teachmetotalk.com/2008/05/03/cant-vs-wont/#comment-1559248 In reply to James Ford.

My almost three-year-old started babling and cooing at three months. His first words mama, dada, started when he was 6 months old and up to his first bday he was saying a few words in English and Portuguese. Then he started going to day care and stop progressing. We later found out that he had middle ear fluid and he underwent surgery. He understands EVERYTHING but many times only says a word once. Last week I insisted he say please before I gave him tea and he said please with a Perfect pitch and tone. He has said sentences like, I love you, my nose mum, where’s the daisaar (dinosaur) only once. He can name all the animals from his books and he responds to commands. I am a language teacher and I have been reading to my child since he was born, I sing a lot to him, I assemble puzzles of the Alphabet and he says many of the letters, I speak slowly and repeat a word several times, I even bought flash cards for my son which I have been using since he was an infant. What else can I do? He grunts, points and whines a lot to get what he wants.
