What is the origin of the word 'trivia'

The word is of Latin origin, and its literal meaning is 'three roads'. So what has that got to do with minor pieces of information?
The Romans had a practise of placing a notice board at the junction of three or more roads, and this notice board was used to announce minor articles of local news. Hence, items of news that had only local interest, became known as trivia, or only worthy of posting on the minor announcement boards.
